I, A.B., do seriously promise and vow, in the presence of Almighty God,
That in this Assembly, whereof I am a member, I will maintain nothing in point of doctrine, but what I believe to be most agreeable to the word of God; nor in point of discipline, but what may make most for God’s glory, and the peace and good of this church.
The Shorter Catechism, agreed upon by the Assembly of Divines at Westminister, with the assistance of commissioners from the Church of Scotland, as a part of the covenanted uniformity in religion betwixt the churches of Christ in the Kingdoms of Scotland, England and Ireland. And approved anno 1648, by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, to be a Directory for Catechising such as are of weaker capacity. With the Proof from the Scripture.

The General Assembly having seriously considered the Shorter Catechism agreed upon by the Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminister, with assistance of Commissioners from this Kirk (i.e., church-WB); do find, upon due examination thereof, that the said Catechism is agreeable to the word of God, and in nothing contrary to the received doctrine, worship, discipline, and government of this Kirk: And therefore approve the said Shorter Catechism, as a part of the intended uniformity, to be a Directory for catechising such as are of a weaker capacity. The Shorter Catechism (107 Questions and Answers)
Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God (1Cor.x31, Rom.xi.36), and to enjoy him for ever (Ps.lxxiii.25-27).
Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?
A. The word of God, which is contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments (2Tim.iii.16, Eph.ii.20), is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him (1Jn.i.3-4).
Q. 3. What do the scriptures principally teach?
A. The scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man (2Tim.i.13, 2Tim.iii.16).
Q4. What is God?
A. God is a Spirit (Jn.iv.24), infinite (Job.xi.7-9), eternal (Ps.xc.2), and unchangeable (Jam.i.17), in his being (Exod.iii.14), wisdom (Ps.cxlvii.5), power (Rev.iv.8), holiness (Rev.xv.4), justice, goodness and truth (Exod.xxxiv.6-7).
Q.5. Are there more Gods than one?
A. There is but One only, the living and true God (Deut.vi.4, Jer.x.10).
Q.6. How many persons are there in the Godhead?
A. There are three persons in the Godhead; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory (1Jn.v.7., Matt.xxviii.19).
Q.7. What are the decrees of God?
A. The decrees of God are, his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby, for his own glory, he hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass (Eph.i.4 & 11, Rom.ix.22-23).
Q.8. How doth God execute his decrees?
A. God executeth his decrees in the works of creation and providence.
Q.9. What is the work of creation?
A. The work of creation is, God’s making all things of nothing, by the word of his power, in the space of six days, and all very good (Gen.i.entire, Heb.xi.3).
Q.10. How did God create man?
A. God created man male and female, after his own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures (Gen.i.26-28, Col.iii.10, Eph.iv.24).
Q.11. What are God’s works of providence?
A. God’s works of providence are, his most holy (Ps.cxiv.17), wise (Ps.civ.24, Isa.xxviii.29), and powerful preserving (Heb.i.3) and governing all his creatures, and all their actions (Ps.ciii.19, Matt.x.29-31).
Q.12. What special act of providence did God exercise toward man in the estate wherein he was created?
A. When God had created man, he entered into a covenant of life with him, upon condition of perfect obedience; forbidding him to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, upon the pain of death (Gal.iii.12, Gen.ii.17).
Q.13. Did our first parents continue in the estate wherein they were created?
A. Our first parents, being left to the freedom of their own will, fell from the estate wherein they were created, by sinning against God (Gen.iii.6-8 & 13, Eccl.vii.29).
Q.14. What is sin?
A. Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God (1Jn.iii.4).
Q.15. What was the sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created?
A. The sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created, was their eating the forbidden fruit (Gen.iii.6 & 12).
Q. 16. Did all mankind fall in Adam’s first transgression?
A. The covenant being made with Adam, not only for himself, but for his posterity; all mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him, in his first transgression (Gen.ii.16-17, Rom.v.12, 1Cor.xv.21-22).
Q.17. Into what estate did the fall bring mankind?
A. The fall brought mankind into an estate of sin and misery (Rom.v.12).
Q.18. Wherein consists the sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell?
A. The sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell, consists in the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the want of original righteousness, and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called Original Sin; together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it (Rom.v.10-20, Eph.ii.1-3, Jam.i.14-15, Matt.xv.19).
Q.19. What is the misery of that estate whereinto man fell?
A. All mankind by their fall lost communion with God (Gen.iii.8 & 10 & 24), are under his wrath and curse (Eph.ii.2.-3, Gal.iii.10), and so made liable to all miseries in this life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell for ever (Lam.iii.39, Rom.vi.23, Matt.xxv.41 & 46).
Q.20. Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?
A. God having, out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life (Eph.i.4), did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a Redeemer (Rom.iii.20-22, Gal.iii.21-22).
Q.21. Who is the Redeemer of God’s elect?
A. The only Redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ (1Tim.ii.5-6), who, being the eternal Son of God, became man (Jn.i.14, Gal.iv.4), and so was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person, for ever (Rom.ix.5, Luk.i.35, Col.ii.9, Heb.vii.24-25).
Q.22. How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?
A. Christ, the Son of God, became man, by taking to himself a true body (Heb.ii.14. & 16, Heb.x.5), and a reasonable soul (Matt.xxvi.38), being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and born of her (Luk.i.27 & 31 & 35 & 42, Gal.iv.4), yet without sin (Heb.iv.15, Heb.vii.26).
Q.23. What offices doth Christ execute as our Redeemer?
A. Christ, as our Redeemer, executeth the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation (Acts.iii.21-22, Heb.xii.25 compared with 2Cor.xiii.3, Heb.v.5-7, Heb.vii.25, Ps.ii.6, Isa.ix.6-7, Matt.xxi.5, Ps.ii.8-11).
Q.24. How doth Christ execute the office of a prophet?
A. Christ executeth the office of a prophet, in revealing to us, by his word and Spirit, the will of God for our salvation (Jn.i.18, 1Pet.1.10-12, Jn.xv.15, Jn.xx.31).
Q.25. How doth Christ execute the office of a priest?
A. Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice (Heb.ix.14 & 28), and reconcile us to God (Heb.ii.17); and in making continual intercession for us (Heb.vii.24-25).
Q.26. How doth Christ execute the office of a king?
A. Christ executeth the office of a king, in subduing us to himself (Acts.xv.14-16), in ruling (Isa.xxxiii.22) and defending us (Isa.xxxii.1-2), and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies (1Cor.xv.25, Ps.cx. throughout).
Q. 27. Wherein did Christ’s humiliation consist?
A. Christ’s humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition (Lk.ii.7), made under the law (Gal.iv.4), undergoing the miseries of this life (Heb.xii.2 & 8, Isa.liii.2-7), the wrath of God (Lk.xxii.44, Matt.xxvii.46), and the cursed death of the cross (Phil.ii.8.); in being buried (1Cor.xv.3-4), and continuing under the power of death for a time (Acts.ii.24-27 &31).
Q.28. Wherein consisteth Christ’s exaltation?
A. Christ’s exaltation consisteth in his rising again from the dead on the third day (1Cor.xv.4), in ascending up into heaven (Mk.xvi.19), in sitting at the right hand of God the Father (Eph.i.20), and in coming to judge the world at the last day (Acts.i.11, Acts.xvii.31).
Q.29. How are we made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ?
A. We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ, by the effectual application of it to us (Jn.i.11-12) by his Holy Spirit (Tit.iii.5-6).
Q.30. How doth the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ?
A. The spirit applieth to us the redemption purchased by Christ, by working faith in us (Eph.i.13-14, Jn.vi.37 & 39, Eph.ii.8), and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling (Eph.iii.17, 1Cor.i.9).
Q.31. What is effectual calling?
A. Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit (2Tim.i.9, 2Thess.ii.13-14), whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery (Acts.ii.37), enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ (Acts.xxvi.18), and renewing our wills (Ezek.xxxvi.26-27), he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel (Jn.vi.44-45, Phi.ii.13).
Q.32. What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life?
A. They that are effectually called do in this life partake of justification (Rom.viii.30), adoption (Eph.i.5), and sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow from them (1Cor.i.26-30).
Q.33. What is justification?
A. Justification is an act of God’s free grace, wherein he pardoneth all our sins (Rom.iii.24-25, Rom.iv.6-8), and accepteth us as righteous in his sight (2Cor.v.19 & 21), only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us (Rom.v.17-19), and received by faith alone.
Q.34. What is adoption?
A. Adoption is an act of God’s free grace (1Jn.iii.1), whereby we are received into the number, and have a right to all the privileges of the sons of God (Jn.i.12, Rom.viii.17).
Q.35. What is sanctification?
A. Sanctification is the work of God’s free grace (2Thess.ii.13), whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God (Eph.iv.23-24), and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness (Rom.vi.4 & 6, Rom.viii.1).
Q.36. What are the benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification?
A. The benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification, are, assurance of God’s love, peace of conscience (Rom.v.1-2 & 5), joy in the Holy Ghost (Rom.xiv.17), increase of grace (Prov.iv.18), and perseverance therein to the end (1Jn.v.13, 1Pet.i.5).
Q.37. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at death?
A. The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness (Heb.xii.23), and do immediately pass into glory (2Cor.v.1 & 6 & 8, Phi.i.23, Lk.xxiii.43); and their bodies, being still united to Christ (1Thess.iv.14), do rest in their graves (Isa.lvii.2) till the resurrection (Job.xix.26-27).
Q.38. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at the resurrection?
A. At the resurrection, believers being raised up in glory (1Cor.xv.43), shall be openly acknowledged and acquitted in the day of judgment (Matt.xxv.23, Matt.x.32), and made perfectly blessed in the full enjoying of God (1Jn.iii.2, 1Cor.xiii.12) to all eternity (1Thess.iv.17-18).
Q.39. What is the duty which God requireth of man?
A. The duty which God requireth of man, is obedience to his revealed will (Micah.vi.8, 1Sam.xv.22).
Q.40. What did God at first reveal to man for the rule of his obedience?
A. The rule which God at first revealed to man for his obedience, was the moral law (Rom.ii.14-15, Rom.x.5).
Q.41. Where is the moral law summarily comprehended?
A. The moral law is summarily comprehended in the ten commandments (Deut.x.4, Matt.xix.17).
Q.42. What is the sum of the ten commandments?
A. The sum of the ten commandments is, To love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and our neighbor as ourselves (Matt.xxii.37-40).
Q.43. What is the preface to the ten commandments?
A. The preface to the ten commandments is in these words, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, and out of the house of bondage (Exod.xx.2).
Q.44. What doth the preface to the ten commandments teach us?
A. The preface to the ten commandments teacheth us, That because God is the Lord, and our God, and Redeemer, therefore we are bound to keep all his commandments (Lk.i.74-75, 1Pet.i.15-19).

A. The third commandment forbiddeth all profaning or abusing of any thing whereby God maketh himself known (Mal.i.6-7 & 12, Mal.ii.2, Mal.iii.14).

Q.57. Which is the fourth commandment?
A. The fourth commandment is, Remember the sabbath-day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all they work: but the seventh day is the sabbath day of the Lord they God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day, and hallowed it (Exod.xx.8-11).

A. The fourth commandment requireth the keeping holy to God such set times as he hath appointed in his word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be a holy sabbath to himself (Deut.v.12 & 13-14).

A. From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, God appointed the seventh day of the week to be the weekly sabbath; and the first day of the week ever since, to continue to the end of the world, which is the Christian sabbath (Gen.ii.2-3, 1Cor.xvi.1-2, Acts.xx.7).
Q.60. How is the sabbath to be sanctified?
A. The sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day (Exod.xx.8 & 10, Exod.xvi.25-28), even from such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days (Neh.xiii.15-19 & 21-22); and spending the whole time in the publick and private exercises of God’s worship (Lk.iv.16, Acts.xx.7, Ps.xcii., Isa.lxvi.23), except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy (Matt.xii.1-31).
Q.61. What is forbidden in the fourth commandment?
A. The fourth commandment forbiddeth the omission or careless performance of the duties required (Ezek.xxii.26, Amos.viii.5, Mal.i.13), and the profaning the day by idleness (Acts.xx.7 & 9), or doing that which is in itself sinful (Ezek.xxiii.38), or by unnecessary thoughts, words, or works, about our worldly employments or recreations (Jer.xvii.24-26, Isa.lviii.13).

A. The reasons annexed to the fourth commandment are, God’s allowing us six days of the week for our own employments (Exod.xx.9), his challenging a special propriety in the seventh, his own example, and his blessing the sabbath-day (Exod.xx.11).

A. The fifth commandment is, Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee (Exod.xx.12).

A. The fifth commandment requireth the preserving the honour, and performing the duties, belonging to every one in their several places and relations, as superiors (Eph.v.21), inferiors (1Pet.ii.17), or equals (Rom.xii.10).

A. The fifth commandment forbiddeth the neglecting of, or doing any thing against, the honour and duty which belongeth to every one in their several places and relations (Matt.xv.4-6, Ezek.xxxiv.2-4, Rom.xiii.8).

A. The reason annexed to the fifth commandment, is a promise of long life and prosperity (as far as it shall serve for God’s glory and their own good) to all such as keep this commandment (Deut.v.16, Eph.vi.2-3).

A. The sixth commandment is, Thou shalt not kill (Exod.xx.13).

A. The sixth commandment requireth all lawful endeavors to preserve our own life (Eph.v.28-29), and the life of others (1Kings.xviii.4).
Q.69. What is forbidden in the sixth commandment?
A. The sixth commandment forbiddeth the taking away of our own life, or the life of our neighbour unjustly, or whatsoever tendeth thereunto (Acts.xvi.28, Gen.ix.6).

A. The seventh commandment is, Thou shalt not commit adultery (Exod.xx.14).

A. The seventh commandment requireth the preservation of our own and our neighbour’s chastity, in heart, speech, and behaviour (1Cor.vii.2-3 & 5 & 34 & 36, Col.iv.6, 1Pet.iii.2).

A. The seventh commandment forbiddeth all unchaste thoughts, words, and actions (Matt.xv.19, Matt.v.28, Eph.v.3-4).

Q.75. What is forbidden in the eighth commandment?
A. The eighth commandment forbiddeth whatsoever doth or may unjustly hinder our own or our neighbour’s wealth or outward estate (Prov.xxi.17 & 21, Prov.xxviii.19, Eph.iv.28).

A. The ninth commandment is, Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour (Exod.xx.16).

A. The ninth commandment requireth the maintaining and promoting of truth between man and man (Zech.viii.16), and of our own and our neighbour’s good name (3John.12), especially in witness-bearing (Prov.xiv.5 & 25).

A. The ninth commandment forbiddeth whatsoever is prejudicial to truth, or injurious to our own or our neighbour’s good name (1Sam.xvii.28, Lev.xix.16, Ps.xv.3).
Q.79. Which is the tenth commandment?
A. The tenth commandment is, Thou shalth not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s (Exod.xx.17).
Q.80. What is required in the tenth commandment?
A. The tenth commandment requireth full contentment with our own condition (Heb.xiii.5, 1Tim.vi.6), with a right and charitable frame of spirit toward our neighbour, and all that is his (Job.xxxi.29, Rom.xii.15, 1Tim.i.5, 1Cor.xiii.4-7).
Q.81. What is forbidden in the tenth commandment?
A. The tenth commandment forbiddeth all discontentment with our own estate (1Kings.xxi.4 & 13, 1Cor.x.10), envying or grieving at the good of our neighbour (Gal.v.26, Jam.iii.14 & 16), and all inordinate motions and affections to any thing that is his (Rom.vii.7-8, Rom.xiii.9, Deut.v.21).
Q.82. Is any man able perfectly to keep the commandments of God?
A. No mere man since the fall is able in this life perfectly to keep the commandments of God (Eccl.vii.20, 1Jn.i.8 & 10, Gal.v.17), but doth daily break them in thought, word, and deed (Gen.vi.5, Gen.viii.21, Rom.iii.9-21, Jam.iii.2-13).
Q.83. Are all transgressions of the law equally heinous?
A. Some sins in themselves, and by reason of several aggravations, are more heinous in the sight of God than others (Ezek.viii.6 & 13 & 15, 1Jn.v.16, Ps.lxxviii.17 & 32 & 56).
Q.84. What doth every sin deserve?
A. Every sin deserveth God’s wrath and curse, both in this life, and that which is to come (Eph.v.6, Gal.iii.10, Lam.iii.39, Matt.xxv.41).
Q.85. What doth God require of us, that we may escape his wrath and curse due to us for sin?
A. To escape the wrath and curse of God due to us for sin, God requireth of us faith in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life (Acts.xx.21), with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of redemption (Prov.ii.1-5, Prov.viii.33-36, Isa.lv.3).
Q.86. What is faith in Jesus Christ?
A. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace (Heb.x.39), whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel (Jn.i.12, Isa.xxvi.3-4, Phil.iii.9, Gal.ii.16).
Q.87. What is repentance unto life?
A. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
GOD spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
I. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
II. I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, which was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: he descended into hell;* (*i.e., continued in the state of the dead, and under the power of death till the third day) the third day he arose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
SO much of every question, both in the Larger and Shorter Catechism, is repeated in the answer, as maketh every answer an entire proposition or sentence in itself; to the end the learner may further improve it upon all occasions, for his increase in knowledge and piety, even out of the course of catechising, as well as in it.
And albeit the substance of the doctrine comprised in that abridgment, commonly called The Apostles’ Creed, be fully set forth in each of the Catechisms, so as there is no necessity of inserting the Creed itself; yet it is here annexed, not as though it were composed by the Apostles, or ought to be esteemed canonical scripture, as the Ten Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer, (much less a prayer, as ignorant people have been apt to make both it and the Decalogue,) but because it is a brief sum of the Christian faith, agreeable to the word of God, and anciently received in the churches of Christ.
